My latest column for WNC Parent is out! Click here to read "10 ways art is fundamental to education." (As usual, you'll need to click on the cover of the magazine, then scroll through to find my article. Actually you can just hit the right arrow at the bottom of the screen twice and then click on the pages 40-41 spread.)

Enjoy. And please let me know if there's anything you would add to the list.

I love the article.. ! I have a question! Would you consider having a wall for painting with markers or paint, for the children? I have a wall in my daughters bedroom exclusive for painting and she loves it.
    Just an idea.
    Congratutions great article!

Yes, I would love it! We don’t have a lot of space though and I’m not sure where we’d do it. I would worry about paint getting on the bedding and rug in the bedroom. How old is your daughter? And does she keep the paint on the wall?

Very true! I’ve married into a family that’s very keen on art – my father-in-law paints, my mother-in-law does sculpture, my sister-in-law is into ceramics, interior and textile design, my husband is an architect – so, yes, we’re surrounded by art. It’s exceedingly important to give a child free rein to explore and experiment with any art possibility – that’s why I really don’t agree with sending kids to drawing/art classes – they’re too structured and have a negative impact on their creativity.
Your blog is very refreshing – just started following you! Thanks a lot.
