Maia and Daphne created this wood collage yesterday, working on it off and on all day long. Maia was home sick from school and spent a lot of time on the sofa "sick bed," but also quite a bit of time gluing wood bits to a largish (2 feet by 2 feet) piece of wood alongside her sister.
I think you know that we have plenty of art supplies around for self directed use. But Maia always asks for a proper Art Project on sick days. She did some drawing and cutting, but then wanted a little more direction. A project that was a little out of the ordinary. A little more Wow.
I set out the piece of black wood on a studio table as well as a basket of wood pieces, some wood glue in small dishes, and a couple of paintbrushes.
That's all they needed to get started.
Both girls worked on their wood collage for large swaths of time throughout the day. I cleaned and organized and paused now and then to photograph the progress.
Now the question is, can I hang this on the wall or will those vertical dowels fall off?
P.S. If you want to try a wood collage like this with your kiddos but don't happen to have an old DIY wood chalkboard lying around that has outlived its purpose, there are other options. You can buy a piece of wood at a hardware or mega home store; paint it black if you like. Or use a piece of black foam core, a piece of cardboard or matboard, or even possibly a canvas.
