A Rainy Day Play Kids Costumes and Dress Up Clothes
.
A Rainy Day Play is an etsy shop and business owned and operated by Cassidy, sewer of costumes and mom to 4 children. She makes fun dress-up clothes for kids including superhero capes, fairy tale cloaks, pirate hats and hooks, Robin Hood and Peter Pan costumes, jet pack wings, and mermaid tails. (My daughters both requested her mermaid costumes when they saw me working on this post.)
.
When I asked Cassidy how she got into sewing costumes for children, this is what she said…

.
Just over a year ago, we moved 2,000 miles away from all our friends and family, to the great state of Illinois – where it rained a LOT more than I was used to!
.
I struggled to find ways to occupy my kids inside, without resorting to the TV always being on. It wasn't until my son wrapped a blanket around his waist and declared "Look! I a PRINCESS!" that I thought maybe these kids could use some dress-up clothes.
.
A Rainy Day Play Kids Costumes and Dress Up Clothes 1

I started my Etsy shop, A Rainy Day Play, in November 2011, and originally my main focus was for the boys – I felt that, unless you wanted a superhero cape, there wasn't a whole lot of boy stuff to choose from.  I've expanded to include some for the little ladies as well - my daughter's dress-up mermaid tail has actually been the source of MORE than one fight in our house, so now even my boys have their own mermaid tails!
I make my own patterns for all my items, and try to be creative and original in my designs.

Besides being the most honest product-testers I could ever hope for, my kids provide me with inspiration and motivation.  My best ideas always seem to come when I'm rolling around on the floor, playing pretend with my kids.  I'm grateful to be able to stay at home with them, while still earning some income (and have fun creating) at the same time.

I love the Peter Pan looking stuff. Reminds me of when my boy was into his Peter Pan phase and wouldn’t take his costume off. :)

  2. Tiffany Boss says

I would love to get my son the Train conductor hat or Pirate Hat and Hook. He looves hats! And I have been wanting to start a dress up collection for him :)

  3. Kathy says

My daughter is obsessed with clocks. The wrist band watch immediately caught our attention. Also the airplane wings!

  4. Kris says

The mermaid costume is what I would buy with the gift certificate—hands down! What great props for simple play. Too many tech distractions and battery operated toys out there. Dress up play is good old-fashioned fun.

  5. Kate says

LOVE the idea of the “soft” light saber for battles! And the mermaid costumes are gorgeous. Thanks for the giveaway and the introduction to this Etsy shop!

  6. Mayla M says

I like the black Captain Hook hat! I would need two so my boys wouldn’t fight over it. I also like the shapes game. I like that they are in a pouch that I can easily take with me.

  7. [email protected] says

I love all the accessories…the watches, the peter pan hats, and the capes. They make for endless fun!

  8. Susan says

The purple mermaid costume. Although, I love the toddler watches too. My son and daughter would love those, they are always pretending to know what time it is!

  9. Caroline says

Oh! All of it is so cute and fun! My daughter would LOVE the mermaid tail, but she has many dress up clothes options, my son, however, loves Peter Pan and the music from the Mary Martin soundtrack, so I would get him the Peter Pan hat and outfit. So much fun!

  10. Darla Myers says

I would defiantly love to have the Fairy Tale Cape in ( brown, gray,or green ) My little one would love playing with this ! Thank you for the opportunity to possibility win,

  11. Elle says

Without a doubt, Robin Hood – I’ve been informed that’s the Halloween choice of costume for my 7yo this year! Thanks for the giveaway!

  12. Rae S says

My son has been asking for a fancy cape for months now and I haven’t found time to make him one, and my daughter would love the mermaid. Decisions, decisions! Win or not, though, I am ordering the felt watch. We make paper ones almost daily.

  13. Kathie Engelbrecht says

Thanks for the giveaway. What a great resource. Boys would love the lightsabers (as would I . . . yes to foam) and the robin hood hat is soo cute.

  14. Heather says

Oooh, the pink mermaid tail and possibly also the pink bra! I have three little girls who would all love that costume. Thanks for the chance!

  15. says

Wings win it!! I’ve only gone as far as making paper wings, which were pretty naff I have to say, so my girls would be thrilled to have a decent pair of wings each!!! Have to say I love ALL the designs tho :-)

  16. Eryca says

oh the watches will be a HUGE hit in my house, as well as the wings and well everything else, lets be honest LOL

  17. [email protected] says

Wings or mermaid tail or both?! Who says you can’t fly and swim?

  18. says

Very cute. would love to see a baseball/softball catcher’s set (mask and chest protector) for the not-yet-old-enough-for real T-ball age.

  19. Dena says

    Hi Jean,
I love the wings jet pack and the mermaid tail. The caper and hat are great too, so not sure which I would choose!! I’d probably let Naomi decide.
    Thanks for the opportunity!

My little girl has just discovered Peter Pan and pirates – she would love to add these costumes to her dress up collection!

  24. [email protected] says

What a fun shop! I would pick a custom cape with a crest patch.

  25. Kelly says

I would get my son a prince cape! He loves to dress up but the boy options are sad sometimes. I love this stuff!

  26. Lauren O'C says

the light saber set!!! i wouldn’t have to hide these because of whacking injuries!!! i also love the jet packs. (of note, i just found your site through tinkerlab and i LOVE it. thanks!)

  27. says

I love the peter pan outfit, but I would really have to choose a jet pack for my son, because he loves the iphone game jetpack and is constantly using his backpack and other random items to be his “jetpack.” Dress up clothes get USED in our house!

  28. says

I was just looking at her Peter Pan hats a few days ago! I would get the full Peter Pan costume, because my son wants to be Peter for Halloween.

  29. Katrina R says

Oh, I would love one of those beautiful capes for each of my boys. We don’t really have any dress-ups, (as I don’t like most of the store-bought ones, and don’t have a sewing machine to make my own). Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  30. Susan H. says

Cassidy’s costumes are adorable… it was hard to choose! I would probably pick the pink/magenta mermaid tail because my daughter loves mermaids and those are her favorite colors. Thanks for the giveaway!!

  31. Mary says

Love the light sabers, capes for boys. My son, who keeps outgrowing our stuff, could really use some of your costumes. Fantastic giveaway.

  32. D in England says

I think I would ask my little one what she would like. I would like the peter pan hat a cape and a watch to make sure I got to Neverland in time.

  33. Sandrala says

My girl really wants to be Peter Pan for Halloween and is very into acting out the story currently. Peter Pan it would have to be!

  34. Agnes says

I love the purple plum mermaid costume and the pirate captain hook buccaneer hat! We have a dress up basket in the living room and these would be great to add to our collection!

  35. mo says

I love the lightsabers. I like the fact that her focus began with boys. There is a lot out there for the girls, but my little man has fewre options.

  36. says

My son wants to be a pirate for this coming Halloween. I was going to make it out of some of his boys clothes because I don’t want to spend half of my earnings on a new costume. He loves Halloween and gets really excited about it every year. What would you recommend I do for a 6 year old?

  37. Teresa says

So many great items, but I think the mermaid tale would be a huge hit at our house right now. Also, the bag of shapes is a great learning tool. Fun stuff!

  41. sheila says

the robin hood costume looks awesome and so does everything else! hard to decide…. but maybe the capes are the best option- so versatile and open ended.

  42. says

I’d have to let my daughter choose, but I’m guessing it would be a close call between the mermaid tail and the jet pack wings. Great costumes!

  43. says

My daughter would love the plum colored mermaid tail. I let her look though the store with me and that was the one that caught her eye. She just turned 4 on the 22nd.

I would purchase the blue and white hat it reminds me of a train conductor and my sons new, fond love is Thomas the trains.

  53. Kathy Boyer says

The costumes are super cute! It’s hard picking one! I think I would try and pick something that both my 5 year old and my 15 month old could wear together so they can have imaginary play together! Such wonderful talent!

  54. Morgan says

So Awesome!! My son LOVES to dress up, and I feel your pain…so little to choose from for boys! I am sure I will be acquiring the mermaid tail one way or another :) Thanks for the chance to win :)
