There’s a common image of the highly intelligent person as someone with an almost uncanny read on others, sizing up a stranger in seconds through some combination of instinct and insight that the rest of us lack. A study published in the journal Intelligence by Christoph Heine, Johannes Zimmermann, Daniel Leising, and Michael Dufner put that image to an actual test, and the results point somewhere more specific and less mystical than “intuition.”

The researchers had 198 participants watch one-minute video clips of 50 different people, each reading a short weather report and then explaining the concept of symmetry, and asked the participants to rate each person’s intelligence. Because the people in the videos had also taken real intelligence tests, the researchers could measure how accurate each participant’s judgments actually were. Accuracy varied a lot from one participant to the next, confirming that some people genuinely are more reliable judges of intelligence than others, and that ability tracked with the participants’ own intelligence, their skill at reading emotions, and, more surprisingly, their general life satisfaction.

What makes the study useful rather than just another confirmation that “smart people are good at this” is that the researchers didn’t stop at accuracy scores. A separate group of raters coded each of the 50 videos for specific behavioral cues, things like how clearly a person’s speech was articulated, whether their explanation of symmetry was actually correct, and, separately, physical attractiveness. When the researchers traced accurate judgments back to what the good judges were actually responding to, the pattern held together around identifiable, learnable signals rather than some ineffable sense of a person. Clearer articulation and more precise, correct vocabulary were doing real, measurable work. The accurate judges weren’t picking up on some hidden aura. They were noticing the same kinds of concrete details anyone could, in principle, learn to listen for, and doing it more consistently.

That finding lines up with research on a related but broader skill: reading what other people are thinking and feeling in general, not just estimating their intelligence. Researchers at MIT Sloan found that groups whose members scored well, on average, on a task called Reading the Mind in the Eyes, in which people guess someone’s emotional state from a photograph of just their eyes, tended to function more intelligently as a group on collaborative tasks. Being good at correctly reading other people’s mental and emotional states, in other words, isn’t just a pleasant social skill sitting off to the side of intelligence. It appears to feed directly into how well a group of people can think and solve problems together.

Here’s where it’s worth being honest about how far this research actually reaches, because the broader scientific search for “who’s good at reading people” has a genuinely rocky history. The social psychologist William Ickes, who spent decades studying what he called empathic accuracy, the ability to correctly infer someone’s specific thoughts and feelings during a real conversation, published a widely cited 2000 study concluding that reliable individual-difference predictors of this skill had proven remarkably hard to pin down. Verbal intelligence emerged as the single best candidate his research team could identify, but even that relationship wasn’t consistent. It predicted accuracy for men in his data but not clearly for women, and Ickes himself cautioned that it remained to be seen whether even that finding would hold up under further testing. Empathic accuracy, in his account, seemed to depend heavily on the specific relationship between two people and the situation they were in, not on some stable trait a person carries into every interaction.

One detail from the Heine study is worth sitting with a bit longer: accuracy wasn’t just linked to the judge’s own intelligence and emotion-reading skill, it was also linked to their general life satisfaction, a variable that has nothing obvious to do with cognitive ability on its face. The researchers didn’t claim to fully explain that connection, and it’s the kind of finding that raises a genuinely open question rather than settling one. It’s plausible that people who are more content tend to pay closer, less anxious attention to the people around them, since less mental energy is tied up in self-focused worry.
