Two well-established bodies of research suggest two specific, teachable mental techniques actually move the needle on performance and follow-through, and neither one requires anything mystical, just a specific way of using the mind before acting.
The clearest evidence for mental rehearsal comes from a 1994 meta-analysis by James Driskell, Carolyn Copper, and Aidan Moran, published in the Journal of Applied Psychology, which combined 62 comparisons across 35 independent studies on mental practice, rehearsing a task in the mind without any physical movement. Across the full body of research, mental practice produced a meaningful, statistically significant improvement in later performance. The effect held for physical, motor-based tasks like dart-throwing, basketball free throws, and speed skating, and it held just as well for purely cognitive tasks like puzzles and categorization problems. The benefit wasn’t uniform, it scaled with how much genuine thinking the task demanded, tasks that required comparing options, organizing information, or generating hypotheses showed a stronger link to mental-practice benefit than tasks that were more purely physical. In other words, rehearsing a task in the mind works best precisely when there’s real mental work embedded in the skill.
A second body of research helps show that rehearsal alone isn’t enough, turning an intention into action benefits from a specific kind of planning. In a 2006 meta-analysis by Peter Gollwitzer and Paschal Sheeran, published in Advances in Experimental Social Psychology, the researchers combined 94 independent tests of “implementation intentions,” a simple if-then plan specifying exactly when, where, and how someone will act on a goal, for example, “if it’s 7am, then I will go for a run before checking my phone.” Compared to people who simply held the same goal in mind without that specific plan, people who formed an if-then intention showed a meaningfully stronger rate of actually following through. The strategy was especially powerful for solving the specific problem of simply getting started, people who struggled to initiate action on a goal saw a real boost once they’d pre-committed to a concrete trigger. The benefit went further too, implementation intentions helped people stay on track when distractions arose and let go of failing strategies rather than persisting stubbornly.

Gollwitzer and Sheeran’s meta-analysis, while large, found implementation intentions worked better for some kinds of goals than others, and pre-planning a response doesn’t guarantee follow-through when circumstances change in ways the original if-then plan didn’t anticipate.
Within those honest limits, the research offers two genuinely actionable habits worth building instead of vaguer self-help advice.
