Yarn art paintings for kids are fun and easy! They are made by glueing yarn into designs and then painting in the different sections.

Updated June 2024

We’ve made yarn art a variety of ways over the years, but one of our favorites is yarn art painting.

Simply dip lengths of yarn in watered down glue, arrange them on mat board, let your designs dry, then paint in the sections.

This is such a fun process, and the art can be totally abstract or more concrete, depending on the kid.

Here’s the full tutorial, plus a video of the process.

MATERIALS

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Prep the materials

Water down some white glue by adding a bit of water to a small bowl of white glue and whisk to combine.

Cut your yarn into sections of any length. Shorter ones are easier to manage, but longer ones are fun to arrange in a “continuous line drawing” or a “scribble drawing.”

  2. Create your designs

Dip lengths of yarn in the watered-down glue, then arrange on the paper or board in any design, abstract or realistic.

You can run your fingers down the length of the glue-covered yarn if you’d like to remove excess glue, but it’s not necessary.

  3. Let dry

Let the yarn art dry. This is best done on a flat surface, either on the table you were working on or on a floor or counter.

  4. Paint!

Once your yarn design is dry, paint the different sections.
