Explore 3 fun and easy ways to make fireworks art with kids using blow painting, splat painting, and toothpick techniques.

Fireworks are such a fun part of summer celebrations, and they are also super fun to create through art! These three firework-inspired painting techniques are the perfect Fourth of July activity. Using blow painting, splat painting, and toothpick painting, kids can create their own explosive designs while experimenting with color, motion, and texture.

Fair warning: these activities aren’t low-mess! But the fun (and the results!) are well worth it. With a little prep—like covering your workspace or heading outside—you can let kids fully enjoy the process without worrying about cleanup.

These are especially great for celebrating Independence Day, New Year’s Eve, or any time your kids feel inspired to make something bold and beautiful.

1. Blow Painting Fireworks

Blow painting is one of our all-time favorite art activities for kids! Start by placing a few drops of liquid watercolors (or watered-down paint) on a sheet of paper, then give kids a straw to blow the paint outward. As the paint spreads in all directions, it creates the look of fireworks exploding in the sky.

Tip: Try neon or metallic paints for extra wow!

2. Splat Painting Fireworks

Splat painting is full of action! Dip a cotton ball into paint, then place it onto the paper. Using a spoon or mallet, have kids give the cotton ball a good whack. The impact causes the paint to splatter outward in an energetic burst—just like a firework! If you want to give kids an even bigger (and messier!) action activity, try splatter painting fireworks!

Tip: This one is messy, so cover your work surface well or take the activity outdoors. Multiple colors layered on top of each other make the designs really pop!

3. Toothpick Firework Painting

For a more detailed and calming technique, toothpick painting lets kids create intricate firework bursts. Drop a few blobs of paint on the paper, and then use a toothpick to drag the paint outward in a radial pattern. The fine lines look like firework trails lighting up the sky.

Tip: Use dark-colored paper for a night sky background!

We hope you give these fireworks art ideas a try! They’re almost as much fun as the real thing!
