A Tissue Paper Suncatcher Craft on Wax Paper

I wanted to show you the new tissue paper suncatcher craft we tried in the decorative wood frame.

The flowers in the flower petal suncatcher decayed and browned after a time and I pulled off the contact paper suncatcher off the wood frame.

This time, I wanted to try a technique I learned from our Blossom Box Kids activity kit: a tissue paper suncatcher with wheat paste on wax paper.

MATERIALS

  • Wax paper
  • Colored tissue paper
  • Wheat paste (1 tablespoon flour mixed with 2 tablespoons water)
  • Wood frame (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

Here’s how we made this…

Stapling Wax Paper to a Wood Frame

I cut a piece of wax paper to fit, then stapled it to the back of the frame.

Then I turned the frame over (so the staples didn’t show) and set it on the table with the colored tissue paper, a bowl of wheat paste, and a paint brush.

I pasted on about two pieces of the tissue paper before Daphne wandered over and asked to do the pasting, so I let her take over.

While we did this tissue paper suncatcher in the wood frame, you could also do it without a frame (like this one) or create a cardboard frame (like these) or use a paper plate as a frame (like with these suncatchers).

Once Daphne said the suncatcher was finished, I hung it in the window where the previous one had been (using a suction cup hook from the dollar store). It was still wet but not at all drippy, so we got to enjoy and admire it even while it dried.

I like how the paint strokes from the wheat paste add texture and visual interest to the finished piece.

I recommend giving this eco-friendly suncatcher a try!*

*As much as we love contact paper for suncatchers, it is not terribly eco-friendly.
