Try glue resist painting on canvas with white glue and watercolors. The glue concentrates the paint color for a beautiful effect.

Updated December 2024

We’ve experimented with glue resist watercolor art in many different ways. Typically the glue resists the paint, leaving a border in between the paint.

But when you put glue on canvas and then paint, the glue concentrates the color rather than resisting it. We’re not really sure why this happens, but it creates such a cool and beautiful effect on the canvas.

This is a super simple but really fun painting activity that even the youngest artists can partake in.

We made these lovely paintings and gifted them to a special grandma for her birthday.

MATERIALS

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Draw with glue

To begin, draw an image or design with your white glue. Let it dry thoroughly. This will probably take a day or so to be fully dry.

  2. Paint!

Add color to your canvas using watercolors. We used liquid watercolors but you can also use a palette. Watch as the color concentrates around the glue designs.

Let your painting dry and hang it in a special place!
