How to make your own chalkboard with plywood and paint. Super easy to make and your kids will be drawing and creating in no time!
Updated June 2025
I’ve always loved the idea of having a big outdoor chalkboard where kids can draw, write, and play games. It’s such a simple way to encourage creativity, and something about doing it outside just makes it even more fun.
A while back, I made a small indoor DIY chalkboard, so I already knew how easy it was to use. This time, I wanted something bigger that the kids could really spread out on. I picked up a large square piece of plywood from the hardware store and a can of paint—and that was pretty much all I needed.
In just a short time, we had a full-sized board ready for all kinds of outdoor art and play. It’s been a great addition to our backyard and a favorite with the kids ever since!
How to Make Your Own Chalkboard

MATERIALS
- Plywood, 4 x 4 feet (or whatever dimensions you want)
- Sandpaper
- Wood primer
- Chalkboard paint
- Chalk
INSTRUCTIONS
- Sand and prime your wood.
Be sure to sand your wood first, as the paint sticks better to wood that has been sanded.
Then, cover the entire board with wood primer and let dry completely. - Add your chalkboard paint
Paint with two coats of chalkboard paint, letting the paint dry completely between coats.
- Rub in chalk
Finally, rub chalk all over the new chalkboard and rub it in with an eraser or cloth.
- Draw!
Now, make your chalk masterpieces and play your chalk games!
We hope you try this project this summer!
