How to make paper mache Easter eggs with kids using balloons and newspaper strips. Decorate these giant eggs as Easter eggs, natural birds’ eggs, or even dinosaur eggs!
Updated March 2025
Over the years, we’ve used paper mâché to make all kinds of fun objects. We’ve made bowls, birds’ nests, piñatas, volcanoes, and more!
But what about giant Easter eggs?!
It’s a bit messy but so much fun! Kids love getting their hands sticky while layering the paper, and the excitement builds as the egg takes shape.
Once your eggs are dry, decorating them is just as exciting. We painted them in bright Easter colors, but you could add speckles for a bird’s egg, or turn them into dinosaur eggs. You could even fill your eggs with treats and crack them open like a piñata!
The best part is that no two eggs turn out the same. Ours all came out unique and full of personality.
Making paper mâché eggs is a fun project for Easter, spring birthday parties, or just a creative afternoon together!

How to Make Paper Mâché Eggs

MATERIALS
- Balloons
- Bowl, covered in plastic wrap
- Newsprint or scrap paper, cut or torn into strips
- Flour
- White glue (optional)
- Paint; we used BioColors, but tempera or acrylic also work
- Collage items for decoration, such as rainbow feathers, tissue paper, and glitter (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS
- Prepare supplies
Before you begin making your eggs, you need to:
– Blow up a balloon and place in a plastic wrap-covered bowl.
– Tear or cut newsprint into small strips.
– Make the paper mâché paste: whisk 1 part flour to 2 parts water. Stir in some white glue if you like. - Apply paper strips to balloon
Dip each newspaper strip in the paste, then smooth onto the surface of the balloon.
Continue adding paste-covered strips of newspaper until the balloon is completely covered with at least two layers of newspaper.
Like we said, paper mâché is a bit messy! - Let dry completely (this can take 2-3 days)
We used newsprint, so we wouldn’t have to paint a primer coat on the eggs. We let our eggs sit out for 2-3 days until they were completely dry. Then we popped the balloon inside.
But if you use newspaper, you can paint your eggs with a coat of white acrylic paint first and let it dry before painting with color. It’s not necessary, but if you want to keep the newspaper text and images from showing through on your finished eggs, you might want to do something similar. - Paint your paper mâché egg!
Now it’s time to paint and decorate your new egg!
Let the paint dry completely before moving your eggs.
As an optional final step, you can add collage elements to your paper mâché eggs.

We had so much fun making these giant eggs! We’re not quite sure what to do with them, except maybe make a giant nest for them!
