heart paper chains

Create heart paper chains by simply folding and cutting paper! With just a few folds and cuts, you can make a string of connected hearts for sweet Valentine’s Day decorations.

My daughter came home from school with a handful of heart paper chains she made with her friends. Inspired, we decided to make more to decorate the house for Valentine’s Day. They’ve added such a sweet and festive touch to all our other heart-themed decorations!

The best part of these heart paper chains is how easy they are to make. Simply fold a strip of paper and cut a heart out, making sure to leave the sides connected. Unfold to reveal your string of hearts! We used large construction paper to make these, but also want to try a long strip of easel paper to make a super long one!

And you can use this method to make decorations for any holiday or season! Try pumpkins for Halloween, stars or trees at Christmastime, and bunnies for Easter.

How to Make Heart Paper Chains

MATERIALS

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Cut strips of paper

To begin, cut strips from your paper. The width of the strips will be how tall your hearts are, so if you want little hearts, make the strips narrow and if you want big hearts, make the strips wide.

  2. Fold your strips

Take one of the strips of paper and fold it accordion-style, making each fold the same width as the desired heart size.

  3. Draw a heart

On the top fold, draw a heart, making sure the sides of the heart touch the edges of the folded paper (otherwise you’ll just have a bunch of separate hearts!).

  4. Cut the heart out

While keeping the paper folded, cut along the lines, leaving the sides of the heart uncut on the folded edges to keep the hearts connected.

  5. Unfold!

Carefully unfold the paper to reveal your connected heart chain!

That’s all there is to it! So easy and so fun, we made chain after chain. We plan on taping a bunch together to make an extra long chain to hang up as a garland.
