5 Winter Book Crafts for Families

1. The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats

We love this simple classic about a little boy exploring his neighborhood in the snow. Get Creative: Be inspired by the snowflake prints on the inside cover and create your own! Simply use a pencil to carve a snowflake shape in a piece of foam. Then paint over the stamp and press onto paper. How many different snowflakes can you make?

2. Snowballs by Lois Ehlert

This fun winter story about a family building snow people with colorful everyday items is made even more creative with Lois Ehlert’s signature collage illustrations using found objects. Get Creative: Create a batch of sparkly snowman playdough and set it out with lots of buttons, twigs, yarn and more!

3. White Snow Bright Snow by Alvin Tresselt, illustrated by Roger Duvoisin

This lovely book from 1948 tells the story of a town as it transforms with the season’s first snowfall. Get Creative: Make some lovely winter ornaments by pressing pinecones and evergreen branches into your own homemade air dry clay.

4. A Polar Bear in the Snow by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Shawn Harris

This simple story of a polar bear exploring in the snowy Arctic is beautifully illustrated with torn-paper collages that layer different shades of white paper. Get Creative: Try your own white-on-white polar bear collages! Tear and cut different pieces of white paper and arrange as much as you like to create a polar bear in the snow!

5. Snow by Uri Shulevitz

We love this sweet story about a boy and his dog enjoying the magic of snow as it covers their town. Get Creative: Create your own town by cutting out cardboard shapes, then add some snow by splatter painting with white paint! These are fun for pretend play and also make a lovely decoration on a window sill.

We hope these books and crafts inspire you to spend a cozy afternoon reading and crafting with your family!
