If you’re looking for a craft project that is great for pretend play, try a cardboard dollhouse. You can customize it however you like.

And there’s something about a dollhouse you’ve made that inspires hours of pretend play.

We like to add a string of lights, for low-key playtime in the evening before bed or first thing in the morning.

MATERIALS

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Make roof and chimney

Use the flaps on the box to create a roof for your dollhouse. If you’d like, cut a cardboard tube at an angle (to match the roof pitch) and glue it on as the chimney.

  2. Draw windows and doors

Once the basic forms of the cardboard house are complete, draw on the windows and doors and cut them out. Make sure to cut the door on three sides so that it opens and shuts.

  3. Paint the house

Spread out a drop cloth and paint your house! This part is our favorite.

  4. Add stained glass windows

If you’d like, you can turn some of the windows into stained glass windows with contact paper and colored tissue paper pieces.

  5. Add electricity!

Finally, add a string of Christmas lights through the house. Turn the lights off and see how your house glows!

Once your house is finished, populate it with your favorite dolls, toys, and animals. Your kids will LOVE playing with this house!
