Learn how to make a God’s eye craft or Ojo de dios with yarn and sticks. Or follow our tutorial and use the foam plate method.

This popular weaving craft has been around a long time––you may remember weaving your own ojo de dios as a kid! (Read more about the history and tradition behind the God’s eye craft here.)

God’s eye weavings are fairly simple to make once you get the hang of how to wrap the yarn. And the materials needed are just yarn + sticks.

This is a fun weaving activity for kids age 6+, with some adult assistance for the younger age range.

God’s Eye Craft for Kids

MATERIALS

  • Yarn in a variety of colors
  • 2 thin sticks (chopsticks, craft sticks, sticks from nature, or bamboo skewers)
  • Scissors
  • Glue

INSTRUCTIONS

Time needed: 30 minutes

  1. Glue sticks

Start by glueing two sticks into a cross shape.

  2. Attach yarn

Tie the first piece of yarn around the center where the sticks cross. Wrap the yarn around one stick then take the yarn to the second stick and wrap it around that stick. Then move on to the third and fourth stick.

    This completes one revolution.

  3. Continue to wrap yarn

Repeat step 2 and continue to wrap the yarn around the four sticks until you’re ready to change yarn colors.
Cut the yarn and tie a new color of yarn onto the first with a knot.

  4. Finish God’s Eye craft

Continue wrapping the yarn around your sticks until you’re happy with your Ojo de Dios.

  5. Finish it off

Tie a knot onto the last stick and make a loop of yarn to hang it.

And that’s it! We think Ojo de dios look great hanging on the wall together!
