Learn how to make candles by pouring wax over ice in small milk cartons. This fun craft produces beautiful, textured candles.
I grew up making these ice candles with my mom. Last winter, we decided to try it again with my kids. The process is simple and the results are beautiful!
When you pour hot wax over ice cubes in small milk cartons, the melting ice leaves behind intricate patterns, making each candle one-of-a-kind. They make a gorgeous decoration and also a thoughtful handmade gift.
Plus the candle-making process is a fun weekend activity for the whole family. It’s easy enough for kids to participate in while being a great introduction to the creative world of candle-making at home.
How to Make Candles with Ice
MATERIALS
- Paraffin wax
- Double boiler or a heatproof bowl over a pot for melting wax
- Small milk cartons (clean and dry, with the tops cut off)
- Candle wicks (pre-waxed with metal bases)
- Ice cubes (small or crushed work best)
- Scissors
- Protective gloves and a heat-resistant surface
INSTRUCTIONS
- Prep the milk cartons
Cut off the tops of the milk cartons to create an open container. Wash and dry the cartons thoroughly.
Place a wick in the center of each carton. If needed, secure it with a skewer or chopstick laid across the top of the carton to make sure the wick stands upright. - Melt the wax
Use a double boiler (or a bowl over a pot of water) to melt the paraffin wax slowly over medium heat. Do not heat directly on the stove to avoid overheating.
While the wax is melting, fill the milk cartons with ice cubes, loosely around the wicks. - Make the candles
This is an adult job: carefully pour the melted wax over the ice cubes in the carton. Pour slowly to avoid splashing, and ensure the wax covers the ice completely.
Allow the wax to cool and harden. As the ice melts, it will create holes and patterns in the wax. Place the cartons on a tray to catch any water that may leak from the bottom.
Once the wax is fully hardened and all the ice has melted (this may take a few hours), peel away the milk carton carefully. Use scissors to trim the wick to about 1/4 inch above the candle surface
Once your candles are made, light them and enjoy the beautiful glow they give off! We had so much fun making these candles and then loved having them on the dinner table all winter long!
